Note: “Madagascar” is the closing track on Night Passage and runs for nearly 11 minutes. Uniquely among the album’s tracks, it was recorded live at the Festival Hall, Osaka, Japan on June 29, 1980, while the rest of the album was recorded at The Complex Studios in Los Angeles. Zawinul described it as “one of the great all-time band improvisations” — only the opening melodic theme was written, with everything after being fully improvised. The recording was captured on a two-track machine on a tour bus under extremely difficult conditions.
