Musicians featured in this piece are:
Cat Stevens – lead vocals and acoustic guitar
John Paul Jones – bass guitar
Alan Tew – orchestral arrangements, cello and timpani
The song was written by Cat Stevens, with the melody based on Yusef Lateef‘s “The Plum Blossom” from his 1961 Eastern Sounds album, for which Stevens later acknowledged the debt and shared publishing credits. Produced by Mike Hurst.
Note: John Paul Jones, who would go on to form Led Zeppelin two years later in 1968, played bass on this track as a session musician. The song’s distinctive sound was built around cymbals and snare drum with cello and timpani prominent in the mix — an unusual arrangement for a pop debut single.
Cat Stevens – I Love My Dog Lyrics
I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through
All he asks from me is the food to give him strength
All he ever needs is love and that he knows he’ll get
So, I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through
All the pay I need comes a-shinin’ through his eyes
I don’t need no cold water to make me realize that
I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through
Na, na, na, na, na, na, nana
Na, na, na, na, na, na, nana
I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through
Na, na, na, na, na, na, nana
Na, na, na, na, na, na, nana
I love my dog, baby, I love my dog
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
I said, I love my dog, baby, I love my dog
Baby, I love my dog
