Note: “American Tango” is the only track on Mysterious Traveller to feature founding bassist Miroslav Vitouš, who had otherwise been replaced by Alphonso Johnson. The piece was improvised in the studio by Vitouš, after which Zawinul brought in an older melody of his to complete it. It is also notably one of the quieter, more sparse pieces on the album, featuring no drums from Ishmael Wilburn.
